As a followup to your answer, do consider the github branches to be stable?  7.0, for example, is updated on a very regular basis, and I’m unclear as to whether it is being used by the odoo community for development purposes, or if only stable patches are merged into it.  It appears from the merged pull requests that the odoo team is using an odoo-dev repo for development, which would indicate implied stability in the odoo repo.
I think the general idea is that numbered branches 6.6, 7.0, 8.0 should be production stable being fed with patches and bugfixes. So all github branches apart from 'master' [and until it's official release 8.0] are supposed to be production stable.

Development (I'd say both odoo and OCA) is being done on the branch master. Odoo 8.0 at this point in time is in a pre-release state, so it is not stable but should be on it's way to that. I know from a thread I recently ran that the OCB-8.0 is not really maintained before 8.0 officially is being released.

The OCB branches are being maintained with more and quicker bugfixes then official odoo (why that is so, is mysterious to me, but still it seems to be a fact. Maybe OpenERP S.A. rides more foucs on adding new functionality then on maintainance [which seems a little weird to me, but that is not the topic of this thread])

So, as per my understanding cloning from the OCB github repository would be the way to go.

All the previous said from a novice level of knowledge. It reflects my understanding. If what I say is not completely adequate in any respect, someone probably soon will raise his/her voice ...

We use the github code retrieved at fixed revision with buildout.

I'd like to poll the community for your recommendations for which release we should be installing for production and for future updates.  Do you install the build from nightly.odoo.com, the launchpad repo, or the github source?  The nightly package appears to be about a month old, but is it the official released stable version?  Or is it better to install the github source to ensure you have all updates?  Note that I am specifically talking about a production ready installation, not something for development/testing.

Thanks,
Nick Burdick
