This is first time I have heard about using - vs _, but it makes sense that it would work.

I agree with everything you state about:
dbfilter = ^%d$
Please consider that you can do much more with:
dbfilter = ^%h$

It might also be of interest that we are doing it with the subdomain filter:

dbfilter = ^%d$

This works for any mixture of subdomain and/or domains as long as the
subdomain name is unique, because Odoo is automatically cutting of the

subdomain1.firstdomain.tld -> db name = subdomain1
subdomain2.firstdomain.tld -> db name = subdomain1

subdomain1.seconddomain.tld -> db name = subdomain1

mydatabase.mydomain.tld -> db name = mydatabase
www.mydatabase.tld -> db name = mydatabase
