Re: Python 2.x discontinued in Ubuntu 16.04

I agree porting odoo to python 3 would be desirable, but have not seen any activity in that direction. I may be wrong, if someone knows about work being done in this sense please post here. A first step would be an analysis of all library dependencies of odoo (are they ported to 3.0? Any significant changes?) We develop our own modules with double compatibility in mind, but it's not easy to contribute back to the core if there are no proper guidelines from Odoo to approach the migration process. Though "python" is still Python 2.7 in Ubuntu 16.04, it is not installed anymore by default, so it is necessary to download it to create Odoo's environment, making the installation process confusing for newcomers and more involved for sysadmins. Also, there are some tech savvy customers who happen to be worried about not having a roadmap for the Python upgrade, posing extra difficulty in the selling process. So, in my opinion, Odoo is overdue in the task of Python 3 migration and is a topic that should be taken into account as soon as possible. > On Mon, May 2, 2016 at 8:41 AM, Giovanni Francesco Capalbo < giovanni@therp.nl [1] > wrote: > On 02-05-16 14:47, Andreas Becker wrote: >> When will Odoo be available for Python 3.0? > As far i can see there are no community branches porting to 3.0, I > believe odoo will remain a 2.7 project for a long time. >> Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is based on the long-term supported Linux kernel release series 4.4. >> In addition to the update from OpenSSH to version 7.2p2, APT and Python 3 have been upgraded.
