Basically there are 2 things you need to learn,

The easiest part is the framework: learning how to develop a module from scratch.  Daniel's book is a good guide for that.

The hardest part is learning the odoo application internals, if you want to modify certain behaviour, you need to know how it works first, before you can modify it.  A good IDE that lets you search and navigate code is wat you need for this.
