Hi Quentin, I did a similar test on 9.0 and I couldn't get the 
translated string to show up in the UI.
After performing the "install language" for English, and adding the 
en_US.po file, I got to see the translation term in the table.
But the UI stubbornly refused to use them when having "English" selected 
in the user preferences.
On the other hand, if using UK English, it worked beatifully.

A v9 bug maybe?
