Re: Chart of Account structure & Financial year closing in Odoo 9

I think the decision to remove the periods and years was partly ok but not fully. For the average user, accounting periods are not relevant - they think of in terms of dates. However, for an accountant or manager periods and fiscal years are a fundamental construct for reporting and analysis. Our solution at the moment is to add periods and years back into the database but leave off the various forms (such as invoice). We then logically populate the period into account .invoice and account.move.line Ultimately we will have to add to the reporting engine but have not looked at that, but I think that this is a good solution for user simplicity but accountant manager functionality.

Would be nice if Odoo added back in to the standard modules.

Subject: Re: Chart of Account structure & Financial year closing in Odoo 9

@Fabian,

The accountant is the end user who will use the system, So let's discuss from his view, not from software engineering view,

If you consider my opinion, here is:-
Accounting 9 is very good version, but has critical points are changed which will prevent applying it in many countries like middle east countries as they considered it ABC accounting:-

1- removing old view account (which will represent child accounts balance)

2- Removing Open/close fiscal periods,
I know that there is an option to close till specific date, but again it is ABC concept for accountants, also they may close period 3 and let period 1 is opened to enter enteries,

Suggestion:-
I suggest Odoo add the above to points as options in setting, so the admin can activate it or use the current solution,

Hoping hearing good news regarding above points, or correct to me if I am wrong,

Tree views in accounts have not been removed but moved to the reporting layer, instead of the account object. The feature, as perceived by the end-user is still there.

But the Chart of Account report (what the user sees) has a hierarchical view. With this approach, you can have as many tree representation as you want: P&L has it's own tree view, Balance Sheet too, Cash flow Statement another one, ...

The default Chart of Account tree view is configured to drill down to two levels, but you can edit it to have unlimited levels. (It's not development, just a configuration of the report) Have a look at the "Trial Balance" report.

On top of that, these changed allowed others advantages:
- much easier to import a CoA
- less error prone: accountant who messed up with the parent, breaking the whole accounting. Now reports are always correct.
- more flexibility as reports are more powerful than tree views

In Odoo 8, most people were working with the CoA report because it was the most dynamic / usable one. In Odoo 9, we think users will use more the P&L and BS reports because it's more comfortable for an accountant. But they can still work in the trial balance if they want.

Hi
@ahmed @mustapha I share the same point of view. It will be difficult if not impossible to convince users
to adopt the new accounting Here in Morocco. Acountants here does not simply work that way.

Agree with Ahmed as Software can change, but end user does not want to change mindset each time.
Like, we do not switch easily between Android phone and iOS so easily.

@Kalpana,

we are talking from accountant view (users) not software view, for example in middel east, I'm sure that no one will accept the concept,
as they have sold concept that they have to create parent account to be the sum of the child accounts.

Really it's issue,

Hello Janeesh,

This change was made for these reasons: (a) to enable to chart to be displayed in a dynamic report instead of the tree view, allowing smart filters and comparisons; (b) to simplify the concepts needed when setting up accounts. Odoo has seen many examples of databases setup incorrectly - without parents. Users also didn't understand Root View. Additionally, other Accounting systems don't use this same concept; (c) Because filtering for a class of accounts, or a search, is quicker than expanding and navigating the tree. Optional TAGS have taken the place of Parents, and the way to browse them is now via the interactive reports.

Hello Community,

Why there is no parent-child relation in accounting?

Every customers are supposed to take summary and detailed report of Trial Balance. With the tree structure of chart of account it was easy to make these reports. There is one customer using OpenERP version 7. Now they needs to change to Odoo 9. But accounting seems totally changed. Main concern is regarding account structure and Closing and Opening of year.

Can anybody give a suggestion?

Regards
Janeesh
