The situation is similar to regular accounting, before Odoo 9 we used 
parent_id but it actually mix two different things:

- The actual data

- The way you want to consolidate and report the data.

Since v9 Odoo the actual data are stored flat in accounts and lines. The 
consolidation and presentation of those data are configure in a different 
object specific for reporting. This allow much more freedom on how to organize 
the data instead of just the parent children relationships.

The problem with analytic account is that the report engine doesnt exists yet. 
But we already included tags on account analytic. Using reports will allow to 
handle analytic distribution use case more easily than in the past. However 
those glue reports are not yet developped.
