We don't see upgrade as a problem. We have organized our business and software to ensure our customers can continuously upgrade and benefit from the new features.

Currently, ~82% or our customers have been upgraded to version 8) In June-July-August, 95% of the installation are on version 8. That basically means that, less than one year after a new release, only 5% of the people are still working on older versions.

Odoo is probably one of the only ERP in the world that handle upgrade efficiently. Odoo Enterprise customers have an upgrade guarantee: we upgrade their data and code at no extra fee for the core and at 800€/1000 lines of code for their specific or community modules. (which is super cheap, most implementation have less than 2000 lines of code) No other software vendor can offer such an upgrade path.

It's clear that the fast evolution of Odoo may be a small constraint to people that develop a lot of custom modules. But on the other hand, it's what made the success of Odoo. If Odoo is that good, it's because of the evolution we did over the past years. And it's important to remain competitive. I don't want Odoo to end up like the other open source players. As you can see in this trend: Odoo is now twice more used than the SUM of all other open source management software:  (which is actually not good for us, we will have to educate and sustain the market on our own ---> I hope other open source players will emerge)

As with every new versions, you have complaints because of the change on this list. I understand people. It's not easy to follow Odoo and every change we do is a cost for someone.

But the benefits of a better and cleaner software is so huge that it's worth the investment for everyone (we have to invest on migration service and R&D, partners have to adapt their modules, ...) In two months, doubts and discussion will stop when people will get used to Odoo 9 (and nobody will want to work on Odoo 8 anymore :) Sometimes, it takes time to get used to something new and understand all its benefits.

Yes, a product that does not move is doomed.
And opening up to consensus in the community is a real plus. 
But we should not slight the impact of the constantly moving target.
Odoo may be damaging its own image: Yes, lots of change to show the dynamism of the product, the company and the community but once you move into it seems you may be quite locked into the version you choose to implement.
(And I am leaving the Community and Enterprise discussion entirely out of the picture).

I am sure that Fabien and the Odoo bunch must have thought these things in a very thorough way. The fact that it has not been clearly conveyed to the marketplace is another story.
