Fedex, UPS and DHL maybe the carriers of choice for the US and partly Germany, but in some european countries (Switzerland, Ireland, UK), the market in terms of carriers is quite different so that most companies work with smaller carriers. This is why, I suggest the use in Europe also of Smartfreight, that can be connected to all these carriers. Only one interface to smartfreight needs to be developed and configure and they have a system that takes care of everything (tracking number, labels for each specific need) and this system also supports least cost routing, so that again, no necessity to program it. This is what we already did for an irish customer.

At the moment, Smartfreight is not yet in all countries: UK, Ireland, Australia.

My 2 cents. There are already several open source modules for these carriers, so why would you want to get one that requires licensing. IMO though, most of the shipping modules I have seen have a convoluted workflow and require excessive clicks to process a shipping label, not at all conforming to what a large volume warehouse would do today.

With applications like UPS worldship and FedEx cafe client you can literally scan the document and press a single key to do the entire shipment request. The weight is automatically read from the scale. I dare anyone to come up with this type of solution instead of one that requires you to process several documents, click 6 times, create a pdf, open a pdf, and print it.
BTW, the software I mentioned above prints the label directly to the printer without you having to press any button.

I am somewhat disappointed by what is available today, and I don't see how they would work. Some of the coding is substandard long sloppy scripts more than an integrated scalable solution. I also have shipping modules which are open source, but probably are not yet worthy for mass distribution because they need more work and do not yet support all carriers.
