Hi Community,

In my opinion, for UPS and FedEx integrations, I highly recommend using API feed from OpenERP to allow UPS WorldShip or FedEx ShipManager to grab order feeds, lines of items, then use those carriers' desktop shipping programs to generate shipping labels directly for faster and seamless shipment processing.

The reason being:

1. Both UPS and FedEx provides Enterprise solutions to generate shipping labels faster, with direct rates from shipping accounts, and you can't really go wrong with processing through desktops (in my experience if you scan order barcode and the labels are out, the total time would take generally less than 2 seconds to print out a label)

2. Shipping rules can be directly implemented on carriers' software to allow picking the lowest rate of shipping method (regardless if you have UPS Ground, SurePost, or even Mail Innovations in one account to allowed to be chosen from)

3. More hardware compatibilities with thermal printers, allowing activation of scales, etc) and no need to write  additional drivers into Odoo

4. API protocol changes from shipping carriers update will not affect Odoo

5. Electronic document integrations for custom, paperless custom forms to allow easier shipment processing

6. Direct integrations with harmonized codes to cross products through custom with no errors

I have made integrations with both carrier through API to allow the above operations to happen.  Obviously having a cloud platform to automatically generate labels are great (such as making Odoo to perform like ShipStation or similar cloud shipping software and allowing labels to be generated based on business rules); however a desktop program can perform much faster label generations and saves seconds of processing time can mean a lot of differences in warehouse operations.

This is just my personal experience with clients that I have worked on who are UPS, FedEx, and USPS and are based in the U.S.  Some businesses prefer to batch print labels and I think that is great too.  My idea is that factoring scales that are activated when packages are placed on shipping production lines can potentially save shipping charges on combined shipments and products that may not always have the same unit weight can impact the potential savings of shipping charges.

Again, this is just my personal opinion.  I think the modules for processing labels are great, and especially with the community members distributing their knowledge and codes are awesome to make shipping easier in a cloud platform, especially on products that have fixed weight.

It is called freedom to choose.
That's the point of open source and it goes both ways (the enterprise version might have better feature that you need).
If enterprise version is not good enough, we do have plenty of alternative...
Not sure there one from synconics is free actually.

My 2 cents. There are already several open source modules for these carriers, so why would you want to get one that requires licensing. IMO though, most of the shipping modules I have seen have a convoluted workflow and require excessive clicks to process a shipping label, not at all conforming to what a large volume warehouse would do today.

With applications like UPS worldship and FedEx cafe client you can literally scan the document and press a single key to do the entire shipment request. The weight is automatically read from the scale. I dare anyone to come up with this type of solution instead of one that requires you to process several documents, click 6 times, create a pdf, open a pdf, and print it.
BTW, the software I mentioned above prints the label directly to the printer without you having to press any button.

I am somewhat disappointed by what is available today, and I don't see how they would work. Some of the coding is substandard long sloppy scripts more than an integrated scalable solution. I also have shipping modules which are open source, but probably are not yet worthy for mass distribution because they need more work and do not yet support all carriers.

Great. All the mentioned features are covered in our Odoo 8.0 demo link related to Fedex, USPS and UPS.
