This is for everyone talking about shipping modules recently, like an explosion of where is this feature?

The shipping feature should support major carriers in a way that is modular and can be implemented/removed, not all required at once.
Not have excessive fields and checkboxes on the fulfillment record, that is aggravating
have many helper functions that can be recycled and used generically, dont just create 1 main function called make label, thats sloppy
Allow the label to print directly to the thermal printer, it doesnt have to be raw, you can still do this with a PDF, use LPR or something,
Support domestic and international
Allow fast processing, almost no clicks. Perhaps create a repeatable wizard, or an interface from jquery where you can work efficiently. No going in between lists and print each one, that wont work well if you have to ship 2,000 packages a day. Imagine how much wasted labor. It should be scan and print, literally
Read weight from a scale, this is a requirement

Create a rate shopping tool. A single interface where a user scans a barcode, and rates appear for each carrier quickly. Allow the option to default to cheapest, or allow creation of basic business rules where method can be chosen automatically. Most US carriers do not allow this type of solution because of their contracts, which is why there is very limited options for this, but everyone wants it. If anyone had such a fast, streamlined, and versatile product, you would have a 45k module on your hands.

My 2 cents. There are already several open source modules for these carriers, so why would you want to get one that requires licensing. IMO though, most of the shipping modules I have seen have a convoluted workflow and require excessive clicks to process a shipping label, not at all conforming to what a large volume warehouse would do today.

With applications like UPS worldship and FedEx cafe client you can literally scan the document and press a single key to do the entire shipment request. The weight is automatically read from the scale. I dare anyone to come up with this type of solution instead of one that requires you to process several documents, click 6 times, create a pdf, open a pdf, and print it.
BTW, the software I mentioned above prints the label directly to the printer without you having to press any button.

I am somewhat disappointed by what is available today, and I don't see how they would work. Some of the coding is substandard long sloppy scripts more than an integrated scalable solution. I also have shipping modules which are open source, but probably are not yet worthy for mass distribution because they need more work and do not yet support all carriers.
