I did this on V7 a while back so my memory might be a bit rusty, so assuming no journal entries:

1. Uninstall the CoA module 
2. Go to accounting, open the chart of accounts and delete them.
3. Go back to settings and under the Actions/Configuration Wizards reset the accounting options.
4. Install the new CoA and reconfigure accounting.

I am having the same problem. What I have figured out so far unfortunately looks like there is no way to get rid of a once defined CoA.
I would be more then happy to learn that I am wrong
