Re: Rate Shopping US carriers

Hi Eric,

I fully agree, Odoo SA has to make money to survive, and that Odoo SA surviving and thriving is in everyone's best interest. I'm sure that as with Magento Community vs. Enterprise there will be community modules built to fill in the gaps for those that are not interested in going the Enterprise route for whatever reason.

With that being said I think the shipping connectors are a pretty vital part of the system and my personal opinion is that they should be included in the core community modules in order to allow Odoo Community 9 to compete head to head with Magento 1.9/2.0, as these shipping connectors are already included in the Magento Community edition as standard in the same manner as the core payment service providers (PayPal, Authorise.net, etc.).

Odoo Community 9 is rapidly filling the gap between features with Odoo vs. Magento, and I would personally love to see Odoo Community 9 be able to meet and exceed the E-commerce/CMS feature set of Magento 1.9/2.0, as once that happens I believe Odoo will reach critical mass and begin spreading like wildfire as people start to catch on regarding the enormous potential it has to be an all-in-one business solution.

As there are already some great community modules out there for UPS, FedEx, USPS, etc. i'll gladly use those in the meantime, however my personal opinion is that it's in Odoo's best interest that Odoo Community 9 should be competitive on e-commerce/cms features with Magento 1.9/2.0, particularly in those two areas (shipping and payment providers).

Regards,

Luke

A lot of new nice features in Odoo 9 will be in the Enterprise version, which makes its value. We cannot complain constantly about that: this is how Odoo SA will finance the RD in the future (some will rant about this fact and disagree but whatever the means Odoo SA needs money to fuel the RD...).
Said so, any good opensource initiative is welcome to bridge the gap between the Community and Enterprise edition!
This is a free world and this kind of initiative is welcome to improve the community version :)

While we're on the subject of shipping modules, I think it would be valuable to build a module that plugs into the Aftership service as well. Aftership provides tracking updates from 277 carriers around the world and it'd be a great way to offer tracking updates from within the Odoo frontend for customers with a login, as well as automated updates via email, SMS, etc.

I had discussed with Kurt Haselwimmer awhile back who I believe has already built a solution for this already that is SaaS-ready (based on server actions, etc.).

I've been in touch with Andrew from Aftership in the past to discuss this, but haven't taken it any further at this point in time. If anyone would like his direct email address please send me a direct email and i'll put you in touch.

Luke

Hi Jay,

I think this would be very useful. Is there any way to separate the shipping modules from the US localisation? I haven't take a look at the modules in detail yet, but I would think that these shipping modules would be useful for people around the world and it would be useful to have the modules separated from the US localisation if possible.

Luke

Guys,

We've been doing Fedex too.

May be, we have to plan a roadmap together to have that done in a sync manner. It seems everyone has worked for special purposes and executed too.

Do you want me to start up OdooUSA for OCA? Please tell me if someone is interested.

Thanks.

Hi Dhaval,

I seem to recall reading somewhere that it was reserved as an enterprise module which is a pity. I'll personally be looking for Community modules for shipping, as my instances will all be Odoo Community deployments.

Luke

Thanks Jay

It is really useful repository.

@Luke, OpenERP Master,

We almost know that there will be 90% of possibility that Odoo Sa will develop and release it under Enterprise version. But I prefer to wait for there comment on it.

We are on way to integrating https://www.shipcloud.io REST Service also but I paused it after watching this video.

On OdooUSA, we have the rate calculation call to carrier!

Hi,

Lots of questions already.

The Odoo module I believe is only available in the Enterprise version but I could be wrong. Also my module is not designed to work with ecommerce addon. It provides shipping quotes on a sales order form only, but you could modify it or pass data to it to work with the ecommerce module. Also, this module currently will not support DHL, but it could.

By default, the module will display your rate based on your negotiations. You have the option of adding a percentage upcharge and also a fixed handling fee. If you specify this, then the quotes you see will reflect this. The quotes will appear in a tab on the sales order form.

I already have this module developed and working, but I am doing quality testing on it now. Currently it is embedded in the Omniship module but it will be a stand alone module the depends on py libraries. I expect to have this wrapped up in only a couple of days.

Currently the module does not do dimensional weight calculation but depending on customer needs and what is funded it can do things like this.

Yes, i'm very interested in this type of functionality. I look forward to checking out the module soon.

Will you be posting it as a new repository to:

http://github.com/aliomattux

or will it become part of or extend Omniship?

Luke

Is anyone interested in Rate Shopping? I am developing a module that rate shops UPS, USPS, FedEx. On the sales order form view there is a header button, you press and it will contact all carriers and services you have configured for rate shopping. It will grab all of the rates and display a sorted list. You can select one and add to sales order.

It only requires 1 click to rate shop all and takes only a couple of seconds to return response.

Will allow configuring percentage increase over your rate to your customers. Allows handling fee. This can be configured either by carrier or by individual method.

Will post code soon.
