Both partner you try to merge together are subscribed as follower to
receive notification on the same object (an invoice, a sale order, or
anything else) trying to merge them could in such case try to write a
second time the subscribtion to that object.

Of course this message doesn't give you a clue which object it is. So
I can't think of any easier solution than scripting or doing some PSQL
querries.
