Hi,

The library needed for aeroo is also published alonside the modules git, just install it, i don't see the problem with that.  Of course it comes with bugs, it's software.  Can you specify which bugs ? did you use the right branch ?

Anyway are those bugs any worse than the bugs that each specific version of wkhtmltopdf has ?  If you don't use the correct wkhtmltopdf version for your webkit or qweb report, you'll get bitten as well.  Lingering files after removal are typical a bad system maintenance symptom and not a software issue ?

I remember that i installed the DOCS service for the first time in less than one hour on my personal laptop.  I asked our sysadmin to deploy it on our hosting platform, and he did that more or less in the same amount of time.  There are dependencies, but i think they are reasonable.

I have wasted weeks with building reports ( such as invoice layouts ) with rml reports ( pre v8 openerp reports ), with webkit v7, with webkit v8 and qweb v8.  Building reports with those engines is a process of trial and error because you don't have any precise control on positioning, where the header starts and stops.  If you need an empty header or not.

There are issues with Aeroo too.  The documentation could be better, but http://www.alistek.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page is a good start.  There seems no easy way to declare a variable within a report, and use it later.  But these are things you can fix by writing a few methods in a custom parser.  Developing and testing new reports is quite easy due to the builtin test report function.

Imo the most important advantage for Aeroo is that you can build your reports with libreoffice/openoffice and use placeholders or fields to fetch data from odoo.  This means that there is no specific knowledge needed in order to layout a report.  Further more, the odt or ods file are directly used to render the report.  With the aeroo docs service you can convert the odt/ods file to other formats such as pdf, doc, xls, etc ...  There is also a module for for printing reports direct to a printer with cups.  Furthermore, Aeroo has been around since version 5.0 !

I have not used jasper nor pentaho reports yet because i did not have time yet to learn yet another tool.  So i can't comment on those.

Overall i'm quite happy with Aeroo and would recommend to try and see for yourselves.

Hi Daniel,

Aeroo is a bit of a problem, because you need to use a specific library version for it, which comes with bugs, and there is a false path in one of the files that points to the wrong library which will give you errors. DOCS connection will give you a handful of issues on dependencies too. And if you don't use the correct module for your Odoo instance, it will cause all sort of anomalies even after removing it (as it will linger in your local files).

If you are thinking of a report editor that doesn't crash your Odoo instance beyond repair, you might want to consider using a third party that connects to your Odoo database, like LibreOffice Base. It's simple, but it works. And with a bit of sql knowledge you'll be able to do quite a lot with it.

Or Jasper Reports is another option. One of my colleagues totally swears by it, although I've only seen it in action a couple of times. It looks quite complete.

Best of luck,
Nuria

Is there any good documentation about Aeroo in any place? Everything I've found in forums, google groups, Alistek's website and youtube is very old, and with use examples about desktop version.

Perhaps the odt / ods creation procedure is the same, but there are a lot of new options in the config menu, without help or doc that I can refer.

Thanks
