I'm going to second Eva's recommendation on Daniel's book, check it out!

I'd also add that I would always recommend to develop on a platform that closely matches what your final code is going to be running on.  For that, I would highly recommend taking a look at using a virtual environment where your odoo install is running on an ubuntu machine.  Vagrant is a great way to manage those environments and then hook into your code via your IDE.  I've recently been using Cloud9 as a web based IDE and been quite pleased with the workflow.

I should point out that it's not for everyone if you're used to something like Eclipse/Pycharm, but personally I prefer a simpler text editor style development environment with console to manage the server running the code.  It's something that stems from learning to code Ruby on Rails first.

Hope that helps,

Nick

You should use eclipse with pydev plugin... Google the three magic keywords(odoo, pydev, eclipse) and you'll get some tutorials
