Thanks everyone.

It turns out our client CAN access Odoo in China.


Because we didn’t assign any group permissions, they didn’t see anything apart from the Messaging menu when they logged in.

I have kept all of the advice in case we need it later.

I forgot to add: I think using a VPN in China is not 100% legal.
So I guess VPN could be a quick and dirty fix to start with while the registration procedure suggested by Eric might be more 'professional' but might take it's time
