why the internal reference field is disabled at the product and which is enabled at the product variant?
what is the use of internal reference at that place?

Hello Aarthi,
Internal reference visible in probuct variants because one product has multiple variants, so you can give a unique identity to each variants with help of internal reference.
Internal Reference is disabled on the Product Template when Variants are enabled so that there can be an Internal Reference (also called SKU) for each Product Variant.
Ray - I know this is an old thread, but I was looking for an answer to this question this morning. Is there any reason why we can't unhide and populate this field for the product template? I'd like to have the product template have an internal reference, and then the variants would all have their own reference that adds a "- variant_id" value to theirs. Thanks!
Yes.
The reason is that Odoo will intervene and force the Internal Reference of a Product Template to False as soon as you create Product Variants.
Even if you unhide the field, as soon as you create a new variant or change the Internal Reference of an existing Variant, the Internal Reference on the Product Template will be set to False.
What you ask would require a programming change.
