Where do I place the customer's vat number details?

You need to install base_vat and then you'll find the related fields directly w/ the partner.

Installing modules can be done via Settings/Installed Modules or Settings/Apps - search for base_vat and install the module...easy as that...

Thank you Wolfgang, cannot find the bas_vat module though also not after clicking modules update.No module found!
You should try others search criteria
Maybe you have not removed the filter for "installed" or it is not available in your addons directory...via Settings/Apps it must be available.
Wolfgang, you are right, removing the filter showed that base_vat was installed. learned something again, thank you. But do you know where I can find the base_vat in the installed modules?
You find it under customer/accounting there you find a field called TIN, this is the one to use.
