I am using Odoo 9 and I wish to send letters to customers and wish to keep a copy of the letter on the customers record. Can anyone help please

You could send the letter via email as an attachment or as text from the customer's page. If you don't want to use email or don't have it set up, you could log an internal note on the customer's page and attach the letter. Look at the bottom of the page for both the message(email) and internal note forms.
