odoo mail aliases not working

Odoo 9.0 CE

I have a problem where I can't get the reply-to for messages sent from odoo to indicate the correct alias. It either shows my catchall@ email if I have the system parameter mail.catchall.alias set, or it is the email address of the odoo user if not. Most responses in forums point to deleting the aforementioned system parameter. This is NOT the solution (see Joachim's reply in https://www.odoo.com/forum/help-1/question/email-catchall-reply-to-odoo-v8-59505 - he seems to have the same problem but with no response). Can anyone help with this please.
