How to configure company access?

I've tried setting up 3 companies. Gave access to 3 company users and myself. However my default company is different than the rest. When i am setting up projects in the project management system, users are unable to assign tasks to me. How do i circumvent this?

The main idea of having 3 companies in one installation is to make things easier for me. But if i have to make 3 different accounts might as well be different installations right?

I've read up that because of giving users portal access or such might break the user account. I'd thought initially that it'd be good to let my account have all the access rights and included portal. Could this be because of portal? I've even tried re-creating my account but the same problem still persists. Please advice.
