Odoo is the world's easiest all-in-one management software. It includes hundreds of business apps:
CRM | e-Commerce | Accounting | Inventory | PoS | Project management | MRP | etc.
Open source Odoo is better in the hands of a professional developer. The official and obvious place to look is https://www.odoo.com/partners. What about companies who develop internally? How do you hire or train up an Odoo developer?
You can look for a seasoned ERP type. This person would know the concepts and terms but probably doesn't know Python well or Odoo concepts. He/she must break the old learning of SAP, Microsoft, Epicor or whatever system fills their brain before getting into Odoo. You'll hear how some things in Odoo don't make sense and should be done differently.
Or, you can look for a strong developer type, preferably a fervent Python developer. You'll have to train up on manufacturing and ERP concepts.
We're hiring a developer specifically for Odoo. Which is better? We're facing this question now. Share your experiences and thoughts.
Evaluating that at the moment as well and our decision is gone to have an (expensive!) local Odoo-Partner for supporting us in the general system architecture and with special requests (e.g. country accounting) and to work additional with experienced freelancers (e.g. India or Russia) for developments.
The ERP-Know-How comes by ourself.
ODOO have great development community and Python is most comfortable to read and understand the code. ERP modules of ODOO are following worldwide best practices of ERP standards. But using Python ODOO uses different approach to business logic. ODOO gives you specific Python advantages (like user written fragments of code in actions) what makes development more simple. By my own experience (Microsoft Dynamics NAV and IBM MAXIMO) I can say: your experience in previous non-Python ERPs will be more inhibitory than accelerating for base development. But in some special parts (Payroll, Accounting, Stock) you will meet familiar algorithms and will not lose time for understanding. Also ODOO is growing quickly and you always will have great community which always is ready to help you.So requirements of ODOO developer consists from 2 parts: experience in ERP, experience in Python (and minor in js and xml/html). If you have employee who know ERP – Then you just give him basic knowledge of Python. And after small training he will be able to perform development. Otherwise, if he know Python then just give him time to read ODOO documentation and in short term he will become ODOO Developer. My opinion: Hiring junior and training him/her by practical tasks is best way to get ODOO developer for your company.
