Can't send email or edit company info or open preferences dialog

Just installed OpenERP 7 on Amazon EC2 micro instance running Ubuntu 12.04. I added a user and OpenERP emailed the new user invitation successfully. The "Test Connection" button in the Outgoing Email Server form reports that the configuration works.

But now when I click the envelope icon in the upper right ... nothing happens. Nor can I send emails in any other way. Additionally, I find that I cannot edit company info nor can I display the preferences dialog.
