General Settings

Initial scope on V15:

  • Manufacturing
  • Inventory
  • Sales
  • Purchase

Activated Settings:

  • Lots & Serial Numbers in the Inventory.
  • Units of Measure in the Inventory.
  • Work Orders in the Manufacturing.
  • Of course, always activate the debug mode.

Problematic

I need to be able to use the concept of tooling for my BoM. It means that the tool comes out of the inventory and goes back in it once the tool has been used. The same component is hence used multiple times in multiple manufacturing orders, meaning it is using the same exact component every time.

Solution

We will create a new unit of measure for the purchase unit of measure being the tool itself. We will create another unit of measure in the same category and define it a "Single Usage". This will be our reference unit of measure. The bigger unit of measure will be the number of times the tool can be used. We will define the bigger ratio as the purchase unit of measure and the "Single Usage" as the generic unit of measure.

We will also define in the product, the tracking as a lot. This will enable us to see the number of usages we have made for this tool.

Here are some videos to show you:

  1. The basic set up: https://watch.screencastify.com/v/I0KVbShdOMWYtmJgApMC
  2. The expected flow: https://watch.screencastify.com/v/7ZiuybkbfEQMfr2YMnN0

This is pretty useful for tooling tracking purposes.

What about using the By-Products feature? Enable support for byproducts in the Configuration --> Settings Menu in the Manufacturing App. The "Tool" is actually regular storable product that is one of the components listed on the BoM of each final product. It is also a by-product of the Manufacturing Order (there is a new By-products tab on each BoM to manage this). The tool can be serial number tracked if there is a unique number for each one, and you can do an Inventory adjustment to bring in all the tools with each of their numbers to make them available for use. The product "cost" would be $0 since the expense of purchasing the tool is probably already recorded from when the tool was billed and paid for. The tool when it is a component will participate in the reservation logic (if you only have 4 tools, the fifth MO will have to wait for the first MO from the others to "make" a tool as a by-product and have it return to stock to be available for another reservation).
