We have (for example) a chocolate product which we sell in a 5kg box and also seal into 500g bags.

We'd like to manage this as a single product (as most aspects are the same, and we'd like to have one product listing on the website), and thus use variants such as Size: 5kg box and Size: 500g bag.

I then need to make a BoM with the 500 variant as the manufactured product and the 5kg variant as the component.

However, when I try to make the BoM, it will give the error "BoM line product "chocolates" should not be same as BoM product."

Is there any way to work around this?

In the case of multi variant, you have two ways to configure your BOM.

1) for each variants you can create BOM (separate bom for each variant)

2) when you have almost same material required then you can create one BOM for main product and in bom line choose appropriate variant.

In your case you are facing issue, because you are assigning the same product/variant in BOM line.

You have to configure like,

Dear Peter,

Did you find a solution? I have the same issue here.

Thank you for your reply Pinakin, however I'm not sure it applies to my case.

For my product, the 5kg box is the component of the 500g bag. (We sell the 5kg box by itself, but we also split it up into 10 x 500g bags to sell).

This would obviously work if the 5kg box and 500g bag were separate products, but we'd like to manage them as variants of the same product, and create a BoM where 1 x 5kg box variant makes 10 x 500g bag variants. Is this possible?

So I don't think in your case BOM helps you. May be you can simple create different UoM like bag and box.
