Can someone explain the difference between the price list architecture in Odoo 8 and Odoo 9? We previously relied pretty heavily on the versioning feature for price lists in Odoo 8 but it appears that has disappeared in version 9.

Dates are now supported on Pricelist rules (called Items in v9), so it appears versions are no longer required.
Be sure to checkmark "Advanced Pricing based on formula" in Sales --> Configuration --> Settings.
