Re: Looking for industry specific examples of Odoo deployments/implementations

Thank you for your quick reply as well. Agree with your opinion regarding difficulty with this type of industry. The failure of the current software/integrator is proof of that. The chemical industry is one that I have thought of as similar, so that’s good to see.
I’ll take a look at OdooMRP in the next few weeks and see if it will be a good fit or not. If I have any questions should I contact you directly, or through the project site?

Thanks again,

- Mike

Hi Michael:
The kind of industry you want to implement with Odoo is the most complicated one on manufacturing (metal, steel, wood and so on). Any company having to "cut" o model pieces are the most dificult to manage with any ERP.

I totally agree Gustavo that you will need heavily modifying Odoo standar/core if you want to offer it to your custormer as solution as it is now. I also agree that success on this case would be the strong changes/extensions you will need to build to extend the core.

Said that, I would like to let you know about OdooMRP that could be nearer of your needs. It's a set of modules extending Odoo core in manufacturing area. Even if it provides a lot of extra functionality (manufacturing by operations, link with projects, subcontracting, product configurator... etc) you would still need to adapt/extend OdooMRP to fit your customer needs. We would be glad to recive your contributions if you find it usefull and we could even help you to define gap analysis about what it's made and what's missing regarding your customer needs.

About the kind of industry using by now OdooMRP modules I can tell you chemical, doors, big machines and small machines. Noone specifically from metal industry itself.

Here it is the OdooMRP repository:

Here it is our youtube channel if you want to take a look about several extra functionality we provide:

I also would be interested on knowing about Gustavo's alumininum industry solution, so is it published somewhere? is it build for what version? OpenERP or Odoo?

Thank you.

We have made adaptations for companies in the aluminium industry, both extruders and producers of finished systems.

We have deal dualities like products considered at the same time units and kg, tolerances, acceptance with input tolerances, processing of units with painting, anodizing and bending.
At the same time, multivariance with more than 50 superficial treatments and colours, for more than 4000 different base products, dynamic creation of variants and final pricing based on weighting and packaging.

In the case of systems, you have to handle complex product configurators, with mapping of needed segments to real stripes, and policarbon surface with auto computation of usage of sheets.

Finally both type of systems fulfil or exceeded customer expectations. Implementation was successful, but those systems are very far from a standard Odoo implementation. They need extensive module adaptation and creation, comprehensive testing and a strong effort from the customer and you as integrator.

Additionally, you will have to deal with tons of bugs of the base that was not tested at the deep you could expect, and most probably (even with a contract) you will often find yourself repairing and modifying the base code (more than that you could expect)

Odoo is in general "over simplistic" managing complex products and real life production processes. Make an informed assessment before doing any commitments.

I think your are underestimating the effort needed. Odoo fit in this market not because of the features it has (comparable to many others ERPs) or low entry cost for standard features, but because of the possibility to modify the system according to real life needs. In fact, your designing and implementing capabilities are by far more important than the base system, and certainly more costly. Expect modification efforts in the range of thousands hours and implementation not shorter than 6-9 months (assuming right support from your customer).

Also, I think your customer is not aware of the size of the challenge if he thinks the critical point is the existence of other implementations of Odoo in the same Industry. Again, the base is not the problem, the critical point is you.

Does the Odoo base support such a system? Yes, but most of the result depends not on the base but on the modification efforts

Please contact privately if you want more info

Be careful. It is not a simple job

Hello Odoo Community,

I'm reaching out to the community for a client that is looking at odoo as an option for migration from an existing commercial ERP. One of the biggest concerns they have is whether or not others in their industry are currently using OpenERP/Odoo, and want assurances that it will be a good fit.

My client is a metals company, and they have a few 'non-standard' challenges. Inventory needs to be tracked by standard units or shape (slab, billet, sheet, coil, ingot, etc.), associated attributes (width, length, gauge, grade, etc.), and heat (chemical make-up of the metal). Production processes often involve transforming, cutting, shaping, washing, or various combinations making typical BOMs difficult to configure and manage.

In addition, weight variances are common. Weights on a PO, at time of receipt, on a Sales Acknowledgement, on the Packing Slip or on the Invoice are rarely the same. However, tolerances need to be tightly controlled. Carefully controlled Sequences and Quality checks are still in place along the way.

The system needs to have end-to-end visibility of the entire manufacturing process; from raw materials acquisition, to testing outside processing, shaping, treating, fabricating and on to shipping and billing.

The question is, has anyone used odoo in this industry and in this manner. If so, can you provide the names of the company or companies? I don't need implementation details or references, just affirmation that others are using odoo for metals processing and inventory -- my client doesn't want to blaze trails (though if the case can be made that odoo is up to the job, they may be persuaded).

I think for the size company, odoo lines up well for their needs, I only need to be able to point to a few examples that other companies are using the software as described above. I've done smaller implementation of odoo/OpenERP myself, but along traditional lines (simple manufacturing processes with simple BOMs, simple parts inventory, and a simple retail/POS installation), not with these complex requirements.

Thank you in advance for any feedback provided,

- Mike
