I have a client that needs to be able to use the general search function in products to search for the vendor product code or vendor product name. Is there a way to do this? I am not a programmer but I do understand XML and the logic.

Studio module may usesfull to modify search view to add field on the fly.
1) After installing studio module click on studio icon which will be available on top right side of window. then select views --> Search
2) select Search view and modify it as per your needs.
