Hi everbody,

we’re currently migrating our existing subscription customers from an old system to Odoo Online v18. Many of our existing customers are using PayPal to manage their subscriptions.

However, we’ve noticed that PayPal doesn’t support tokenization out of the box in Odoo v18. Because of this, customers can make the initial subscription payment via PayPal, but renewals and cancellations don’t work automatically, since Odoo doesn’t receive any PayPal subscription events.

In other words, the built-in PayPal payment module treats subscription payments as one-time payments, not recurring ones.

From what we can tell, it seems the native PayPal integration isn’t fully compatible with Odoo Subscriptions. We’re aware that providers like Stripe can handle PayPal subscriptions — but that’s not ideal for us due to additional costs.

Has anyone successfully implemented PayPal subscriptions using the original PayPal payment module in Odoo v18?

Any advice, insights, or possible workarounds would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Hello Anna,

It's correct that the standard PayPal module does not support tokenization (recurring payments) out of the box. It may come in the future, but not in version 18.0.

If you do not want to use Stripe, alternatives could be to look for another standard payment provider supporting both tokenization and PayPal in 18.0, such as Worldline, or to migrate to a different hosting (e.g., Odoo.sh) and either develop the missing feature for the PayPal module yourself, or go with a 3rd-party provider from the apps.odoo.com appstore.
